Energising Queenstown

Queenstown is a fast-growing town that’s leading the way with its vision for a carbon-zero future

This website brings together the projects we’re working on to support Queenstown to become the most electrified destination on earth.

It’s run by Transpower, Aurora Energy and PowerNet (which manages the Lakeland network).

As Queenstown grows and electrifies, there are different views about how best to meet future electricity needs. Some people place emphasis on local generation, solar and batteries, and the independence these can offer. Others are more concerned about affordability, reliability during peak winter demand, and the ability of the electricity system to recover quickly from major disruptions.

Our role is to work through these views openly and responsibly, balancing local aspirations with the need to maintain a secure and reliable electricity supply for the whole region, now and into the future.

First, we’re making sure there’s enough electricity coming into the region to support electrification. And second, we’re creating a modern, responsive and resilient electricity system for the people of Queenstown that will support more homes and businesses to install rooftop solar, batteries and other smart technology.

Right now, we’re:

  • Investigating a new transmission line to bring more electricity into the Queenstown region from late 2030

  • Supporting homes and businesses to install rooftop solar, batteries and other smart technology
