A new transmission line
A team of experts from Transpower, Aurora Energy and PowerNet evaluated the options and feedback from a public consultation held in 2025 and have chosen an option for further investigation.
That option is to build a new transmission line between Cromwell and a new substation at Arrow Junction (double circuit line, 110 kV).
The transmission line will have the capacity to power around 26,000 more homes plus 700 small to medium businesses and 150 larger commercial enterprises.
Large-scale transmission infrastructure projects like this generally take 5-8 years to investigate, consent, plan and deliver. The investigation phase alone will take around three years and will include a range of environmental and geotechnical assessments and technical studies to help identify a suitable location for the new transmission line and substation, and to support any future consent applications.
Throughout the investigation, we will continue to engage with residents, councils, mana whenua, local businesses and business and community groups in Cromwell and Queenstown to understand local considerations and gather feedback.
